      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 17 – Fellglow Keep - With the immediate threat ended, Khajiit turned her attention to the caged elf. ‘I don't have them anymore,’ Orthorn said when this one asked what he had done with the books. ‘She took them... The Caller. They threw me in here until they were ready to use me in one of their experiments.’</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 17 – Fellglow Keep - It was too much to hope for that the wizard watching over Orthorn was the last of The Caller’s apprentices. A pang of jealousy pierced Kay’s heart to see so many mages gathered outside the college. ‘One day,’ this one muttered as she approached a room where apprentice pyromancers practised fireball spells. ‘ ‘Hmm?’ Stenvar queried, careful to keep his voice low.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 17 – Fellglow Keep - Ascending from the dungeons, Kayjiit’s nostrils were overwhelmed by the metallic stench of blood. ‘What foul sorcery are they conducting here?’ Stenvar asked as this one picked her way through a room used for surgery. Upon a table, the mutilated remains of a male vampire were caked in blood while another rotted in a cage suspended from the ceiling.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 17 – Fellglow Keep - ‘Let’s get your books and get out of here,’ Stenvar said as the flames petered out. ‘There’s one over there.’ Stenvar’s enthusiasm was commendable, but the book on the table opposite the cages was a generic text. This one doubted a book readily available on the open market was the one she sought.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 17 – Fellglow Keep - The combat was swift but brutal. With the element of surprise. Two of the mages lay bleeding before the third could cast a spell. As Khajiit kept the third mage occupied, fighting fire with fire, Stenvar swept in to deal a vicious strike and bring the battle to a close. Patting out the flames that clung to this one’s robes, Khajiit channelled her healing magic to repair her singed skin and turned to Stenvar.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 17 – Fellglow Keep - Studying the women more closely, Kay noticed their skin was more pallid than most Nords. What this one had initially taken to be bloodshot eyes were indeed a permanent discolouration. Unable to trust that the women would not attack if they were released, and unwilling to leave them to starve to death, Kay summoned her flames and incinerated each of them in turn, the last of the three giving this one a pitiful look as the flames lapped around her.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 16 – Hitting the Books - Since Khajiit would be heading south again, this one might as well visit Windhelm and inform the alchemist at the White Phial of the damaged phial. ‘Figures. I doubt you have sufficient knowledge to harm the phial even if you wanted to,’ the old elf replied upon seeking him out and explaining the phial was damaged before this one found it. ‘Here’s for your trouble.’</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 16 – Hitting the Books - Continuing south, Kay and Stenvar made their way to Fellglow Keep and the supposed hideout of the former students that took the books, only to be ambushed by a red and black clad Argonian. Between Kay’s magic and Stenvar’s bow, the assailant stood no chance, falling to an arrow in the neck before she could land a blow.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 16 – Hitting the Books - True to his word, Stenvar had despatched the wizard without breaking a sweat, his greatsword cleaving the man in two. With the grounds cleared, Kay pushed against the door to the keep. Locked. ‘What about the dungeons?’ Stenvar asked. Discovering the dungeon door was unlocked, Kay made her way into the keep, Stenvar close behind.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 16 – Hitting the Books - Khajiit nodded. If assassins were after this one, the longer it took to realise their first attempt had failed, the longer it would be before another attempt was made. Dragging the body to the edge of the cliff, Kay pushed the dead Argonian over the edge, the corpse striking the cliff and spiralling out into the rushing water below.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 16 – Hitting the Books - Drawing the spriggan’s attention, Khajiit lured it towards the keep, dashing over the crumbling walls and ducking out of sight as she neared the atronach. Spotting the approaching spriggan, the atronach attacked as Stenvar rushed the wizard. Keeping a safe distance, Kay watched the spriggan and atronach tear each other apart, waiting to finish the victor. With a scream of anguish, the spriggan struck down the atronach, only to die to its final flash of flame. Satisfied with the result, this one went to assist Stenvar.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 16 – Hitting the Books - Racing back to the college, dodging ice wraiths and a sabre cat, this one sought out the Archmage. Unimpressed by Khajiit’s description of the orb, the old man sent Kay to find some books on the orb and learn what it might be. Typical. Locating the librarian, this one described the orb only to have the librarian tell Kay the books Khajiit needed had been stolen. Hanging her head and heaving a dejected sigh, this one asked where the books had been taken.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 15 – Under Saarthal - Great, Kay thought as they advanced through the ruins. Just what this one needed. First dragons. Now, dead wizards. This one just wants to get enough money and knowledge to open a shop. Inevitably, as was the tendency with ancient ruins, draugr rose from the dead to attack, only to fall to the combined magic of Tolfdir and Khajiit.</image:title>

Our attacks reflected off the draugr as he advanced on us. <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 15 – Under Saarthal - Joined by Tolfdir, Kay explored he hidden passage, arriving at an altar in the centre of a circular room. ‘Hold, mage, and listen well,’ a voice called as an apparition appeared at the altar. Unsure if Khajiit’s flames would harm the apparition, Kay did as instructed. ‘Judgement will be passed on your actions to come,’ the apparition continued. ‘You alone have the potential to prevent disaster. Take great care, and know that the Order is watching.’</image:title>

Below us, a mysterious orb was suspended in the air, a shimmering vortex of energy protecting it. ‘Why is this buried so far within Saarthal?’ Tolfdir asked as this one scanned the room for threats.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 15 – Under Saarthal - Descending into the ruins, Kay followed Tolfdir and the other students, paying little attention to the wizard’s history lesson. ‘We’re particularly interested in the prevalence of magical seals,’ Tolfdir said when this one asked why the place was so important. As this one looked around at the cobwebs and moss hanging from the walls, one of the students grumbled something about desecrating the resting place of his ancestors, prompting the elf in the group to mutter something about her ancestors.</image:title>

Unfazed, the zombie continued to stare at Khajiit as it rocked back and forth, waiting for an opportunity to attack. Again, this one hurled fire at the zombie. Over and over Kay attacked until the draugr collapsed in a smouldering heap.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 14 – First day of School - Arriving at Winterhold, this one found the place to be disappointing. A handful of buildings stood before the college, hugging the mountainside like babies clinging to their mother’s teats. Nodding to the city guards as she passed, Kay strolled right up the bridge leading to the college only to be stopped by an Altmer mage demanding to know why this one wanted to enter.</image:title>

Her instincts alert to the malice beneath the elf’s arrogant demeanour, Kay held back, listening for a convenient moment to interrupt.</image:title>

No such luck. Tolfdir taught Kay the words of a basic ward spell and instructed this one to erect the shield. Focusing her magicka, Khajiit did as instructed, holding the shield up until Tolfdir’s fireball exploded harmlessly against it.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 14 – First day of School - ‘I have a message for you,’ the man said as he handed over a letter before strolling back to the building on the cliffside. Wondering who would possibly be sending this one a letter, and know that Khajiit was on her way to Winterhold, Kay opened the letter and read. Why would the jarl of Falkreath be inviting this one to become a thane? Suspecting the letter to be some sort of joke, this one scrunched up the paper and shoved it into her pocket. It would make lighting the next campfire easier if nothing else.</image:title>

Nodding in agreement, this one retired to her room and the comfort of a warm bed. After sleeping under the stars, the appeal of the bed proved too much for Kay. <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 12 – The White Phial - Spurred by the possibilities that the white phial presented, Kay fought her way deeper into the catacombs. Learning from her experience in Bleak Falls Barrow, this one blasted each of the resting draugr that she passed, lest one should rise as she passed and attack. Not all the bodies were zombies, but It was a tactic that proved most wise, giving Khajiit the opportunity to burn several undead before they could rise and swing their weapons.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 12 – The White Phial - Listening for signs of pursuit, Kay crept forward, flames at the ready. Before her was a flight of stairs, divided by a corridor, that ascended to a majestic wall carving akin to the one in Bleak Falls Barrow. Whispers emanated from the rock as this one approached, stopping when Khajiit was within reach of the rock. Just like the barrow, the room darkened as the voices went silent before the light reasserted its dominance over the darkness.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 12 – The White Phial - Onwards, Kay marched, searching the temple for the white phial while remarking on the similarities to her venture into Bleak Falls Barrow. The difference was, this time there was an item of personal value to be retrieved. A phial that replenishes the liquid within would have major implications for this one’s alchemical experiments.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 12 – The White Phial - Unsettled by the edifice, this one hurried down the steps and along the corridor, trusting that it would lead to the phial. Discovering an ornate bowl that matched the description the old alchemist gave, Kay took out the mixture he provided to unlock the phial. As the stone wall slid back to reveal a hidden room, this one marvelled at the ingenuity of the trigger mechanism. Far more inventive than the simple locks of Bleak Fall Barrows. As she waited for the door to fully open, Kay wondered if the composition of the mixture played a part in the lock’s design or if she could have just peed in the bowl.</image:title>

A meal of bread and cheese helped with the cramps in Khajiit’s stomach as the deep breaths of cold air helped flush the grogginess from her mind. Unfazed by the flames lapping around them, the draugr continued to advance. Forced further back by the axe of the lead zombie, Khajiit found herself pushed into the open. If the description given was accurate, it sounded like a valuable piece of equipment for a budding alchemist such as this one. <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 10 - Heading North - With evening drawing closer, Kay began to tire as she trudged past Mixwater Mill. The temptation to stop and ask if there was any lodging was strong, but Khajiit had precious little coin to spare on such luxury. No. Much wiser to save the coin and find a safe place to pitch a tent for the night.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 10 - Heading North - Watching from behind the pillar, this one saw the bandit turn and move along the mountain path towards the tower. Not wanting to be caught out in the open, Kay dashed for the tower taking refuge next to the door. ‘You can’t hide from me!’ shouted the bandit, unaware Khajiit was not hiding. This one was waiting to strike.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 10 - Heading North - Leaving the bandit to burn, this one climbed to the top of the tower, gathering what provisions Khajiit could find. With her pack stuffed to the brim with food, Kay hurried back across the bridge, the Skyrim weather turning damp and grey as she went. Leaving the tower behind, Kay descended into the valley and the thickening mist.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 10 - Heading North - Given her earlier experience, this one assumed staying too close to the road made her too tempting a target for other roaming bands of thugs. As the road rose, hugging the edge of the mountain while the river cut deeper into the valley, Kay scoured the mountainside for a safe place to pitch a tent, spying an old fishing shack across the river. The state of the roof suggested it was uninhabited.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 10 - Heading North - It was unlikely this one would reach Windhelm by sunset after the diversion at the tower. An unfortunate turn of events as Kay was eager to trade for some warmer clothes. Regretting leaving Whiterun in such haste, this one picked up her pace to be rid of the chilly mist as it turned into rain. Luckily, the downpour was short-lived, the sun emerging from behind the clouds by the time Khajiit reached the valley floor and crossed the river.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 9 - Hitting the Road - Only half-listening as a guard made his report to the Jarl, this one waited for an opportunity to ask for the reward. Imagine Kay’s surprise when the Jarl replied, beaming with pride, and presented Khajiit with a pair of boots from his armoury. All that work for a pair of boots. And men’s boots at that. Was the jarl expecting this one to stuff them with rags to stop them flopping about on Khajiit’s feet, yes?</image:title>

There was no sign of the archer. Thinking the way was clear, and that the archer must have fled after seeing the other bandits vanquished, this one climbed back to the road only to spot the archer emerging from the tower.</image:title>

Heading straight to Farengar’s study, this one was surprised to see a hooded woman at the wizard’s desk. Her features looked familiar, but Khajiit could not place why. Torn between wanting to offload the Dragonstone and discover what the woman wanted, this one hesitated.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 9 - Hitting the Road - Ahead was a pair of towers with a bridge spanning the river. Presumably a watchtower, Kay saw no other route to the tower on the opposite bank. Filling her waterskin in the clear but chilly waters of the river, Khajiit was taken aback when an arrow clattered across the stones not more than two feet from where she crouched. Turning to the tower, this one spied an archer on the bridge and someone running down the road.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 9 - Hitting the Road - Although the rumours of dragons were everywhere, the woman spoke with the certainty of an eyewitness. Maybe she was at Helgen, yes? That would explain why this one thought she had seen the woman before. Noticing Kay in the doorway, the woman turned to Farengar. ‘You have a visitor.’ ‘Ah yes,’ Farengar said as Kay approached and handed over the Dragonstone, ‘the jarl’s protégé.’</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 8 - Dragonstone - Staring up at the strange carvings, Kay could hear the faint murmur of voices, a distant chanting that sounded ominously familiar. Waves of magical energy radiated from the rock, washing over this one’s body but doing no harm. Closer still, the air seemed to darken, the cavern’s phosphorescence dimming. Curiosity lured Kay in until her vision clouded, the world turning black as the voices stopped.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 8 - Dragonstone - Blasting the skeletal remains with flame once more, to be sure the zombie was dead, this one searched the cindered cadaver, finding the Dragonstone beneath its scorched armour. Stuffing the relic into her pack, Kay wasted no time fleeing from the tomb, following a draught from beside the tomb to a cave in the mountainside. Emerging into the open Skyrim air, this one breathed deeply, sucking in a lungful of frosty, afternoon air. The snow had almost abated, the grey clouds moving south with the wind.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 8 - Dragonstone - Wreathed in magical fire, the ancient zombie raised its weapon and charged at Khajiit. Ducking the blow, this one retreated to the steps while launching another blast of fire. Still the zombie advanced, slashing at Kay’s arm and drawing blood. Back, further down the steps, this one retreated, the undead warrior’s relentless assault forcing Khajiit back over the narrow stone bridge.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 8 - Dragonstone - The cavern opened into a vast chamber with a sacred burial site at its far end. Moving closer, Khajiit scouted the chamber, with its vaulted ceiling echoing the sound of running water, keeping as much cover between herself and the strange edifice ahead. Deciding there was no obvious threat or undead guardian in the chamber, this one moved closer.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 8 - Dragonstone - By the time Khajiit had scaled the near vertical mountainside to the gentle slopes below, the snow had ceased completely, the late afternoon sun emerging to glisten from the river below. The river that would no doubt lead to Riverwood. All Kay had to do was follow it. Cautiously, watching for signs of the beast that had left vast blood splatters across the rocky ground, this one descended to the river, glad to be away from Bleak Falls Barrow.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 8 - Dragonstone - This one turned around. The cavern was the same, its strange luminescence once more illuminating the room. <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 7 - The Golden Claw - Deciding that the pattern followed the sequence on the claw, rather than mirroring it, this one turned the dials until they matched the claw. Inserting the talons into the holes, Kay tensed at the click of a latch. Remembering the rain of poisoned darts that struck the bandit when he pulled the lever with the wrong sequence in place, Khajiit skipped back from the door, but this one’s caution was unnecessary. Emerging into a natural cavern, this one spied more undead, a solitary warrior patrolling the path to the lower levels of the barrow.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 7 - The Golden Claw - As Khajiit vanquished the undead warrior, Kay noticed that the effort required to conjure fire was less taxing. Being able to sustain the gout of fire longer would make dealing with the zombie warriors easier, yes? Even so, this one did not like the look of the battleaxe wielded by the undead warrior Khajiit discovered guarding the door to the lower levels. It was likely the Dragonstone lay beyond that door. Tucking the claw into this one’s pack, Kay crept around the spike trap, gingerly testing for pressure plates that might send the metal grid swinging around and into Khajiit’s body, only to discover more traps ahead.</image:title>

Intrigued by the claw and irritated by the Dunmer’s lack of gratitude, Khajiit gave chase. Racing through the catacombs, Kay skidded to a halt at the cries of fear and pain echoing back along the corridor. In his haste, the thief had disturbed the dead.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 7 - The Golden Claw - Taking the artefact from Khajiit’s pack, Kay inspected the claw. The positioning of the talons lined up perfectly with the three holes in the door, but the symbols did not match. Within the palm of the claw there was a bear, a moth and what looked like a mummified body, but the order was different to the markings on the door. The question was, which way did they go. There was only one way to find out.</image:title>

Torching the first bandit before ducking back into the shadows, this one slinked across the ruins, keeping low to the ground.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 6 - Bleak Falls Barrow - With the way clear, this one entered the hall, seeking out the trap’s mechanism. In his haste to plunder the barrow, the bandit had failed to notice the stone pillars to his left. But how did they work? Above the gate was a series of matching images, the middle one collapsed and lying broken on the ground. Surely, the lock could not be so easily deciphered, no? There had to be some trick, yes?</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 6 - Bleak Falls Barrow - Deeper into the barrow, this one heard a voice calling out for help. <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 6 - Bleak Falls Barrow - The desire to yell out in pain as the arrow punched into Kay’s shoulder was near unbearable. Biting down on Khajiit’s lip in agony, this one sprinted for cover, slipping from ruin to snowdrift to ruin until Kay was sure the archer had lost sight of Khajiit. Gripping the shaft of the arrow as the bandit called out, baiting Khajiit to reveal herself, Kay yanked the arrow out. The wound was shallow enough that the limited healing magic Khajiit knew could stitch it back together.</image:title>

Unable to ignore such a thing, this one slowed to a walk, allowing the guards to run ahead. Wary of traps or the sanity of the man stood at the side of the road, this one approached and asked about his painted cow. ‘To let the giants know we’re giving it to them willingly,’ the farmer replied when Kay asked why he was painting a cow to sacrifice to the giants.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 5 - Farengar's Favour - As Kay approached the bridge to Riverwood and the climb to Bleak Falls Barrow, the dark clouds that had been gathering throughout the day decided to drop their burden. After a late lunch in Riverwood, this one braved the elements and, equipped with extra camping gear from Riverwood, began the ascent. With the clouds blocking out the sun, the evening grew dark much sooner than this one anticipated. Fortunately, there was a watchtower on the road up the mountain that this one could shelter in for the night.</image:title>

With sword in hand, she demanded to know why Khajiit approached. ‘This one has news from Helgen,’ Kay replied as she studied the elf’s aggressive stance for a warning sign. Against such an opponent, it was unlikely Khajiit would walk away unscathed. At the mention of Helgen, the jarl called out, demanding that this one provide details.</image:title>

Not wishing to discover if the one wielding the torch was friend or foe, this one crept around the rocky outcrops on the mountain path and continued her journey up the mountain. With aching stomach, cold bones and tired eyes, Khajiit found a sheltered spot in the shadow of the barrow to pitch her tent and build a fire. Mindful of the dwindling rations, this one consumed a frugal supper before bedding down for the night.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 5 - Farengar's Favour - Mixing the flowers and mushrooms Khajiit picked along the road to Whiterun, Kay produced some poisons and potions. Not powerful potions, but it was a start. Soon, this one would become the most prominent trader in Skyrim. For now, Khajiit would need to run errands for wizards. As Kay left the city, the contingent of guards Irileth had rounded up were making their way to Riverwood. Far safer to travel in the company of guards, no?</image:title>

If Khajiit had not seen it, this one would not believe it either. ‘We should send troops to Riverwood at once,’ the Dunmer, a woman named Irileth, declared. Fortunately, a group of adventurers had stopped it from wreaking havoc on the frightened farmers. ‘No thanks to you,’ a female Nord scoffed when this one approached to enquire what happened. ‘A warrior such as you is surely capable enough to fight a single giant, yes? After watching it flitting between the flowers as Khajiit devoured some cheese and bread, Kay crept towards the river and pounced. As the butterfly fluttered away, Khajiit followed its movements, pouncing again only to miss for a second time. For twenty minutes this one chased that butterfly before finally catching it and adding its wings to Khajiit’s growing list of potion ingredients.</image:title>

With the sun barely lighting the horizon, Khajiit cleaned the wolf fur and stitched it to form a pack for her journey, stuffing it with food for the road. Continuing through the forest, Kay arrived at the edge of the village of Riverwood. Less impressive than Ralof made it sound, the village boasted a blacksmith, an inn, some farmhouses, a trading post and a lumber mill. Hardly the place for this one to study and forge her own destiny.</image:title>

Is there somewhere we can talk?’ This one tensed at the prospect of being drawn into the Nord’s fight, but there is no harm in talking, no? Ralof told his sister, Gerdur, and her husband, Hod, of the capture of Ulfric Stormcloak and the dragon attack on Helgen as this one observed, confirming details when required.</image:title>

Bounding across the uneven terrain was a great, black wolf, slavering at the thought of sinking its teeth into Khajiit’s flesh. A blast of flame was not enough to discourage it from its course, dodging as this one weaved her magic. The spell may not have stopped the wolf, but it gave Kay the advantage. Lashing out as this one stepped to the side, Kay tore at the wolf’s face, gouging its eyes, while avoiding its yellowed teeth. Disorientated by the ferocity of this one’s attack, the wolf stood no chance against another burst of flame.</image:title>

Passing skeletons in prison cells and dead prisoners in cages, Khajiit marvelled at the brutality of these people. Sensing that escape was within reach but wary of further Imperials, this one hurried after Khajiit’s Nord guide, trusting that he knew the way out. Above us, the dragon attack continued, the shockwaves of its assault causing dust to shake loose from the ceiling. Being only a trainee mage, the gout of fire Khajiit hurled at the captain was nothing like the blasts of fiery destruction hurled by the dragon. Even so, a little flame is still sufficient to kill when used well. Baked within her armour, the captain fell before her blade could harm this one. With a mighty swing of his axe, Ralof finished the other Imperial soldier before rooting through their pockets.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 2 - Unbound - The fighting was brutal and bloody. The Nords in blue rushed at the enemy, blades held high, only for one of them to fall to enemy arrows. Spying an oily shimmer to the cave floor, this one seized the opportunity for a swift resolution, igniting the oil and bathing two Imperials in fire. When the flames died down, only Kay and Ralof remained standing. Numb to the needless death, this one trudged along behind Ralof, torching a swarm of spiders that descended from the ceiling of another cavern before arriving at another cave. ‘Bear,’ said Ralof, crouching near an abandoned cart.</image:title>

Candles lit the room, casting their light on the cooling body of another Nord in blue. The Nord from the execution, Ralof, told this one to take the dead one’s things while he searched for an exit. Remembering this one’s vow to never steal, Khajiit left the dead Nord to his gods and watched as Ralof tried the gates. It was a curious observation that penetrated through the fear to reach this one’s racing mind. Before Khajiit could make sense of the dragon’s command, the colossal wave of force emanating from the dragon’s maw knocked this one backwards through the open door of the keep. Dazed, this one picked herself up and made to run, but the doors had slammed shut behind Khajiit, keeping the dragon away. For now.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 2 - Unbound - Crouching at the sound of voices, this one entered the stock room and crept towards two Imperial soldiers gathering supplies. With another blast of flame, the first one fell to Khajiit’s magic while Ralof ended the other soldier. Taking some of the supplies for ourselves, we pressed on. The sound of battle from ahead made Ralof rush forwards. This one was more cautious. Ralof had helped Khajiit, but this one was not about to die for strangers.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 1 - Bound - The air was cold, but the sun beat down on Kay as the cart rolled into town, warming her shivering form with its rays. Imperial soldiers and Nord warriors watched as this one was forced to kneel. Khajiit felt Soldier’s foot on this one’s back, pushing Kay’s head to the block. Khajiit was innocent. This one was hungry. Kay only killed a chicken; this one did not know that chicken belonged to Imperials. Kay is not ashamed to admit that this one began to cry as Khajiit’s head rested on the rough wooden surface of the executioner’s block.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 1 - Bound - This one’s throat tightened as Kay looked up at the headsman’s axe. That was when this one saw it. The dragon. Descending from the mountains, its black wings cast broad shadows across the square as it crashed down onto the watchtower. Arrows loosed at the monster as it bellowed, knocking Kay and the executioner to the ground. Fire rained from the sky in response to the dragon’s terrifying shout, smashing and burning the town with its elemental fury.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 1 - Bound - Jumping with one’s hands bound is easy. Landing is more difficult. Rolling with the impact, Khajiit looked back through the acrid, black smoke of the burning inn, but there was no sign of the Nord. This one was not about to wait. Racing to the exit, Kay looked out at the devastation, searching for an escape from this hellscape. All this for a chicken this one did not get to finish eating.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 1 - Bound - From a nearby tower, the Nord warrior from the cart called out to this one. The Imperial soldiers were not watching, their terrified gazes were fixed on the sky and the black-winged lizard circling above, blasting the town with gouts of fire before swooping towards the walls and plucking a hapless soldier from the parapet. Terror rooted Khajiit to the ground, but this was no time to be idle. Bravery is not about being fearless, it is about acting despite being afraid. This one acted.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 1 - Bound - Crouching at the door to the tower, Kay watched as the dragon continued to rain down fiery destruction on the town. The few arrows that found their target appeared to make no difference to the dragon’s furious assault. From the tower, this one could see the locked town gates. There would be no escape that way. ‘Up through the tower,’ the Nord instructed.</image:title>

      <image:title>Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara - Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 1 - Bound - Far from home, Khajiit was minding one’s own business when Soldier grabbed this one, said Khajiit steals food. This one was innocent. Soldier did not like Khajiit, did not listen to this one. Imperials thought this one was part of brutish Nord rebellion and sent Khajiit to execution. This one told them Khajiit’s name is Kay Sarah Sara. Soldier joked about this one’s name. Called Khajiit, Kayjiit, but this one’s name was not on Imperial list.</image:title>

      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Dry Brushing</image:title>
      <image:caption>The bigger the difference in shade between base coat and dry brush colour, the more quickly the highlights become apparent. Whereas the grey used to paint the moloch was close to black, requiring several layers to create a noticeable change, the shades of brown on the flagellants are so different that the highlight is noticeable after only a couple of sweeps.</image:caption>

      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Dry Brushing</image:title>
      <image:caption>After being dry brushed, the skin of the cultists was given a wash with a light brown, darkening the highlighted areas to create a tanned look and settling into the recesses to further darken the areas untouched by the dry brushing. Unlike most highlights, the weapons were first painted brown then heavily dry brushed with black. This resulted in small pockets of the lighter colour in the recesses. When combined with the iron highlights dry brushed over the top, this creates the illusion of tiny pockets of rust. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get them to show up on camera.</image:caption>

      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>The first of my models where washes were an extensive part of the paint job was this trio of Tzeentch Flamers, painted by progressively layering green paint over a white base coat and blending into the white by bringing each wash layer a shorter distance across the model.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>After being dry brushed, the skin of these cultists was given a wash with a light brown, darkening the highlighted areas to create a tanned look and settling into the recesses to further darken the areas untouched by the dry brushing. The shield was painted by first washing the edges with red then blending up to the orange by thickening the wash with yellow paint as I moved closer to the centre of the shield.</image:caption>

      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>My early forays into washes involved a simple wash of red in the recesses of my Khorne warriors’ armour. A quick and simple way to get an army painted for gaming.</image:caption>

      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>The skin of this ogroid thaumaturge was painted using a mix of blue, pink and purple washes to make it look like the skin was morphing through the colour spectrum. After each wash, the model was drybrushed with white paint to help blur the colours together for the next wash.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c57bfd480db0db02268f2/1594670288728-CPFTCW2E4Y8YYL2FPZB1/direwolffur.jpg</image:loc>

      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>The body of this efreet was painted using only washes, starting with yellow and progressively getting darker as more red was added for each successive layer. The flames were painted by alternating between dark green washes and light green dry brushing.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c57bfd480db0db02268f2/1594819540909-TMB00O9I2VWMWPOV9MDN/gnolls.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>These gnolls were painted with the same yellow as the demon, but the spearman was given a dry brush of a very pale yellow to highlight the tips of its fur, illustrating the difference between a highlighted unit and one that has only had washes applied.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c57bfd480db0db02268f2/1594817729035-8LF4ZP92V4E1LSYRGTYS/Tzeentch+horrors.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>The skin of these Tzeentch Horrors was painted entirely using washes. The yellow wash was gradually darkened using red paint as layers were built to create a blend of oranges and create shade. Red was gradually added to the blue wash to turn it purple and make the model look like its skin was shifting through through the colour spectrum, as befits a demon of change. In this way, the bulk of the model is painted quickly, leaving the details to be picked out with more precision.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c57bfd480db0db02268f2/1594818967884-Q4CMEJ23WNY33ISQ9RXY/vanguardlayer3.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>After three layers, the right hand side of the model has gained a smooth blend from the raised areas to the slightly darker recesses, giving a natural skin-like transition in colour. Further emphasis could be achieved by lightly dry brushing the model and highlighting the ridges of the muscles and knuckles. The arm that has only had one layer looks blotchy as the wash has contracted as it dried, a common problem with washes.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c57bfd480db0db02268f2/1594818269192-23Y2N3H8RKHW9RCZ1CU8/thinned+yellow.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>Add a little water at a time to a drop of paint until the desired viscosity is reached. I find it best when the colour is still vibrant but the consistency is bordering on water. You don’t want to get it so thin that you’re effectively painting with the water you clean your brush in.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c57bfd480db0db02268f2/1594818811912-ND58FVOQH5TRXRZ145YO/vanguardlayer1.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>painting guides - Painting Basics: Washes</image:title>
      <image:caption>I began the wash on this model by covering the larger, raised areas then dragged the paint into the creases to increase the quantity of paint in the areas where shade would be most needed. Adding more layers will smooth the transition and create a smoother blend.</image:caption>
